Scientists from the University of California in San Diego discovered it causes heart disease and cancer by triggering a harmful immune response.
Humans cannot produce the molecule - a type of sugar - but it occurs at high levels in lamb, pork and beef.
The research is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
